Aliev–Camkiran Heavyweight Clash Marred by Disgraceful Post-Fight Attack
Distance boxing, relentless pressure and mounting tension defined the heavyweight contest in Istanbul before an ugly post-fight attack overshadowed the action.
ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE — A tense heavyweight battle between former UBF European Heavyweight Champion Umut Camkiran and French Olympian Mourad Aliev ended in ugly scenes Saturday, as a post-fight confrontation escalated into a mass brawl inside the ring.
The two heavyweights met at Ülker Sports Arena in a scheduled 12-round contest for the vacant WBC Silver heavyweight championship. Camkiran entered unbeaten at 25–0 with 23 knockouts, while Aliev brought a 15–1 record with 11 knockouts.
Aliev Uses Distance to Disrupt Camkiran
According to viewing observations supplied to the UBF newsroom, Aliev employed an intelligent approach built around his height, reach and southpaw stance. Working behind his jab and straight left, he sought to keep Camkiran at distance and prevent the powerful Turkish heavyweight from establishing a sustained attack.
Whenever Camkiran closed the gap or pressured him against the ropes, Aliev frequently pivoted away or clinched. Those tactics repeatedly interrupted Camkiran’s rhythm, leaving him struggling to build momentum.
Camkiran continued pressing forward with encouragement from the crowd. At the end of the seventh round, Aliev appeared to taunt the cheering spectators, adding tension to an already competitive encounter.
Pressure and Frustration in the Eighth
Camkiran increased his pressure in round eight, throwing heavy shots but struggling to connect cleanly with his elusive opponent.
During one close-range exchange, Aliev leaned heavily on Camkiran as the Turkish heavyweight bent forward. A visibly frustrated Camkiran responded with a punch around Aliev’s waistband. Aliev appealed for a point deduction, but the referee treated the incident as accidental and allowed the contest to continue without deducting a point.
By round nine, Aliev appeared to have established control through his distance management and ability to disrupt Camkiran’s advances.
Tensions Escalate in Round Ten
The tenth brought another contentious moment when a punch from Camkiran landed behind Aliev’s head and Aliev went to the canvas. Camkiran protested that his opponent had turned his head into the shot, an explanation the referee appeared to accept.
The contest had become an increasingly ill-tempered, tit-for-tat affair, with physical exchanges and repeated appeals to the referee interrupting the action.
Camkiran appeared to regain the initiative in the eleventh, advancing with renewed determination and forcing Aliev onto the defensive. Pressing forward like a bull, he gave the taller fighter less room to settle as Aliev sought to preserve distance and escape close-range exchanges.
Final Bell Followed by Chaos
At the final bell ending round twelve, Aliev immediately raised his arms and walked around the ring in apparent celebration. Camkiran approached him, and the fighters came together for an embrace.
According to the replay observations supplied to the newsroom, Aliev appeared to direct an obscene hand gesture, resembling a masturbation motion, toward someone in the crowd as Camkiran approached. The gesture appeared to precede the eruption of violence, although the footage alone could not establish every exchange or the full sequence of events.
People flooded the ring, objects were thrown, and several individuals appeared to strike Aliev. Replay footage was also described as showing one spectator headbutting him.
The camera cut away from the confrontation before the broadcast switched to a promotional advertisement, preventing viewers from following the immediate aftermath. When coverage returned, some order appeared to be returning, although the situation remained tense.
It was a disgraceful display by those involved in the attack. Whatever gestures or words preceded the confrontation, nothing justified spectators entering the ring and assaulting a fighter.
A Night Overshadowed
For Camkiran, whose career includes the UBF European heavyweight championship, the contest represented an opportunity to advance against an opponent with Olympic experience. Instead, the scenes after the bell overshadowed the boxing.
Initial Turkish reporting identified Aliev as the winner. Official scorecards and the precise decision were not independently confirmed for this report. The round-by-round account and description of the disturbance are based on viewing observations supplied to the UBF newsroom.
