Leonard Dorin Doroftei

Leonard Dorin Doroftei, also known professionally as Leonard Dorin and nicknamed “The Lion,” is a Romanian boxing trainer and former WBA lightweight world champion. Born on April 10, 1970, in Ploiești, Romania, he built a distinguished career across amateur and professional boxing before bringing that experience to the development of other fighters.

Doroftei represented Romania at two Olympic Games, winning light welterweight bronze in Barcelona in 1992 and lightweight bronze in Atlanta in 1996. He also won the 1995 world amateur lightweight championship, establishing himself among the leading international boxers of his generation.

In the professional ranks, Doroftei captured the WBA World Lightweight Championship by defeating Argentina’s Raúl Horacio Balbi on January 5, 2002. He held the championship during 2002–2003 and fought IBF champion Paul Spadafora to a draw in a world-title unification contest on May 17, 2003. His transition from Olympic medalist to professional world champion gave him experience at two of boxing’s highest competitive levels.

Today, Doroftei continues his connection to Romanian boxing through coaching and Box Club Leonard Doroftei in Bucharest. His work with young boxers and professional fighters carries forward the experience he gained representing Romania internationally and competing in world championship bouts.

Doroftei is a trainer of Ion Daniel Ciuma, the UBF World Super Middleweight Champion. Their training relationship was publicly reported in May 2025, during Ciuma’s rise through the UBF championship ranks. Ciuma’s progression through the UBF European and Inter-Continental titles to the world championship connects a new Romanian champion with a coach who has experienced world-title success himself.

Within the UBF’s trainer directory, Doroftei is recognized for his work with Ciuma and for a career spanning Olympic competition, amateur world championship success and professional world championship boxing.
